The eyes at rest

Share

Your eyes have probably been fixed on something close for a while.

This screen, maybe, or a page.

Close work and screens commonly leave the eyes tired and dry. In yoga, the eyes are given their own care, rested on purpose. Some people find that looking long into the distance eases them, though the research on that is mixed.

When did yours last look far?

What you'll need

  • A window, or the longest view you have
  • A minute away from the screen

Method

Lift your eyes from what's close and find the furthest thing you can, out of a window if there is one.

Let the gaze go soft, not fixed, and blink a few slow blinks.

Stay with the far view for a slow minute, letting the eyes ease.

Take a break like this a few times a day for a week, and notice whether your eyes feel less tired, and where the tension gathers when it builds.
