Something in the balance
Standing on one leg is a child's game most of us stop playing. Balance, like anything, fades when it's not asked for.
Balance is a quiet measure of how the body is doing. In one large study, people who could hold a one-legged stand longer tended to live longer. The good part is it answers quickly to practice.
How long can you hold yours, eyes open?
What you'll need
- A clear spot, near a wall or chair to steady you
- Bare feet, if you like
Method
Stand near something you can touch for safety, and lift one foot off the floor.
Hold as long as it stays steady, then swap sides. Let go of the support as you feel surer.
Try it once a day for a week or two, and notice how long each side holds, and whether it grows as the days go on.
